FAQs
All young people, along with their families, carers, and schools, will be invited for a site visit prior to starting their placement. This allows the young person to experience the environment and the various activities offered, with the visit tailored specifically for them.
During the visit, families, carers, and schools will have the opportunity to meet with our pastoral lead separately to discuss the operations and practical aspects of our provision, ensuring that the more mundane details are kept away from the young person. A lot of topics will be covered, however in advance please see a number of frequently asked questions:
-
How big are the class sizes? We host a maximum of 12 young people on site each day. Depending on the number of participants and the activity, we may divide them into smaller groups of four or five. However, we recognize that social interaction is an important part of behaviour, so we encourage working together as much as possible when appropriate.
-
Are you OFSTED registered? We are not OFSTED registered, as registration is not required for alternative provisions offering a maximum of 15 hours per week (3 days) per young person. While we are not registered, we welcome schools to conduct their own quality assurance checks and safeguarding audits as needed. We’re also available to support schools during OFSTED inspections in any way possible.
-
Do you provide transport? We offer transport as part of the placement between home and site if needed. Details will be explained further during the visit.
-
How do you work with the school? It's our intention to work as closely with the school and family/carer of the young person as possible. Weekly feedback through a progress report which tracks their personal development and targets set out in their referral form.
-
What are the timings of your provision? We liaise with all parents/carers as to what time the transport will be approximately arriving to collect their young person. This will usually be between 0815 and 0900. Once on site, the day is divided up into various activity periods before and after lunch which is at 1200. At 1415 we work together as a team to close down the site and then head off at 1430.
-
Do you stay on site all the time?Whenever possible, we encourage off-site activities. This not only allows us to observe how young people interact with the public but also broadens the range of activities we can offer. For any off-site activity, parents or carers will be asked to complete a consent form.
-
What do you mean by Military Inspired?Glad you asked! The military inspired element is about how we approach the activities: small theory, lots of hands on practice. Plus the way we interact the young people, we speak to them as individuals, use humour a lot and give clear working boundaries Whilst the activities, feel of the camp and principles are military inspired, we are very much a nurturing environment. All our staff are trained to form attachments with each young person and promote such qualities as resilience and confidence through positive role modelling.
-
Are your staff qualified? All our staff are qualified to a minimum of Safeguarding Children level 2, along with PREVENT. We have a Designated Safeguarding Lead and at least three first aiders on site at all times.
-
What is the process of joining? When you're ready to refer a young person to our provision, visit the referral page and complete the necessary information. Once we receive your referral, we’ll arrange a site visit for the young person and their family. This visit provides an excellent opportunity for us to connect with the young person and get to know them better. After that we will confirm what days, when to start, and away we go!
-
What is the difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2?Phase 1 is for the young people that will come on our site and engage in the activities to complete the end of term Exped. They are normally years 7, 8 & 9 and use our support to develop regulation strategies, enhance social skills, and build resilience in navigating the school environment. Phase 2 is for year 10 and up with the aim of securing work experience to support their career development. This often leads to a shift in their perspective on the importance of GCSEs. Demonstrating the relevance of academic achievements and the opportunities unlocked through practical, hands-on work experience frequently transforms their mindset.
-
Do we need to pack food?We offer breakfast snacks in the morning and a cooked meal at lunch. If there are any specific dietary requirements or if the young person needs to know the menu in advance, please speak with our Pastoral Lead so we can make suitable arrangements.
